+# TONL v1 fixture assumptions
+
+These fixtures define Mercury Toolbox's Rust-native TONL v1 surface for tests
+and examples.
+
+The representation is JSON-backed and line-oriented:
+
+- A document object is written as `key = <JSON value>` per non-empty line.
+- Record streams are separated by `---`.
+- Lines beginning with `#` are comments.
+- Values after `=` must be valid JSON literals, arrays, or objects.
+- Non-object root values are represented by the reserved `$ = <JSON value>` key.
+
+This keeps TONL deterministic, streamable, and easy to convert to and from JSON
+or JSONL without a Node/TypeScript runtime.
